Submillimeter-selected Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
The first generation of submillimeter(submm)-wave surveys are being carried out using the 450/850-μm SCUBA camera at the JCMT on Mauna Kea. These surveys are potentially sensitive to galaxies at very high redshift, and the galaxies that have been detected so far appear to contribute the greater fraction of the mm/submm-wave background radiation intensity measured by COBE. In order to understand this new population of galaxies, individual examples must be studied in detail across many wavebands; in particular their redshifts must be determined. We discuss the potential selection effects at work in submm-wave surveys and describe the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies selected or luminous in the submm waveband. We also describe the general procedure for, and emphasize the difficulty of, identifying optical counterparts to submm-selected galaxies. Finally, we summarize what is known about the redshifts of these galaxies and the source of their luminosity.

The Aztec/sma Interferometric Imaging Survey of Submillimeter-selected High-redshift Galaxies
We present results from a continuing interferometric survey of high-redshift submillimeter galaxies with the Submillimeter Array, including high-resolution (beam size ∼ 2 arcsec) imaging of eight additional AzTEC 1.1mm selected sources in the COSMOS Field, for which we obtain six reliable (peak S/N > 5 or peak S/N > 4 with multiwavelength counterparts within the beam) and two moderate significa...

We report the detection of a 3.6σ 350μm-selected source in the Boötes Deep Field. The source, the first Shortwavelength Submillimeter-selected Galaxy (SSG 1), was discovered as part of a blank field extragalactic survey using the 350μm-optimised Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. With multiwavelength photometry from NOAO-NDWFS (R an...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in the Z=2.565 Submillimeter Galaxy Smm J14011+0252
We report the detection of CO(3→2) emission from the submillimeter–selected luminous galaxy SMMJ14011+0252. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a merger system with spectral characteristics consistent with a starburst at z = 2.565. The CO emission confirms the optical identification of the submillimeter source and implies a molecular gas mass of 5×1010h 75...
متن کاملMapping the Evolution of High Redshift Dusty Galaxies with Submillimeter Observations of a Radio-selected Sample
Direct submillimeter imaging has recently revealed the 850 μm background to be mostly composed of a population of distant ultraluminous infrared galaxies, but identifying the optical/near-infrared (NIR) counterparts to these sources has proved difficult due to the poor submillimeter spatial resolution. However, the proportionality of both centimeter and submillimeter data to the star formation ...
متن کاملA POPULATION OF HOT, DUSTY ULTRALUMINOUS GALAXIES AT z 2
We report spectroscopic redshifts for 18 Jy radio galaxies at a mean redshift of z 1⁄4 2:2 that are faint at both submillimeter and optical wavelengths. While the radio fluxes of these galaxies could indicate far-IR luminosities comparable to high-redshift submillimeter-selected galaxies (k10 L ), none are detected in the submillimeter. We propose that this new population of galaxies represents...
متن کاملThe Overdense Environments of WISE-Selected, Ultra-Luminous, High-Redshift AGN in the Submillimeter
The environments around WISE-selected hot dust obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs) and WISE/radio-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at average redshifts of z = 2.7 and z = 1.7, respectively, were found to have overdensities of companion Submillimeter-selected sources. The overdensities were of∼2–3 and∼5–6 , respectively, compared with blank field submm surveys. The space densities in both samples...
